How do I get referred to Westmead Hospital for my pregnancy?
Every booking starts with a referral from your GP.
- See your GP. Your GP sends a fully completed referral through the WSLHD eReferral system.
- Check the catchment area. Westmead accepts women living in the Parramatta, Holroyd and The Hills local government areas. If you live outside these areas, you are accepted only if you or your baby have a condition that needs care at Westmead, or if you are privately insured and your obstetrician is on the Westmead staff.
- Ask for the care you want. For the Midwifery Caseload Practice or PAPOOSE, register your interest online, or ask your GP to note it on the referral.
- Go to your booking-in visit. This is usually at about 12 weeks, or 10 weeks if your pregnancy is complicated or you are 35 or older.
- Book your classes. Childbirth and parenting classes are booked online, and the weeknight course includes a tour of the Birth Unit.
What pregnancy care options does Westmead Hospital offer?
- Midwives clinics. At the Women's Health Clinic, or at outreach clinics in Castle Hill, Constitution Hill and Greystanes community health centres.
- Midwifery Caseload Practice (MCP). The same midwife cares for you through pregnancy, birth and after. It suits healthy women planning a natural birth, and a homebirth may be possible if your pregnancy is low risk.
- PAPOOSE. A free midwife service for healthy women having their first baby.
- SMILE and COSMiC. SMILE is a free continuity of care clinic in Castle Hill and North Parramatta. In COSMiC, midwifery students care for you, supervised by experienced midwives.
- Dragonfly Midwifery Program. Continuity of care for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families.
- Doctors' clinics. For women with medical or pregnancy problems, with a maternal fetal medicine clinic for complex pregnancies.
- GP shared care. An accredited GP shares your care with the hospital.
- Private obstetrician or private midwife. You still book in with the hospital and go to a booking-in appointment.
NSW Health explains each option on its Pregnancy care options in NSW page.

It cares for babies born early and babies who need specialist care. If your baby needs surgery in the first few weeks of life, care is shared with the Grace Centre for Newborn Intensive Care at The Children's Hospital at Westmead. Parents can visit any time, day or night. For general enquiries, call (02) 8890 7375, 7am to 9pm.

In the Midwifery Caseload Practice or PAPOOSE, you can go home 4 to 6 hours after the birth if you and your baby are well. If you would like to stay, you recover on the maternity ward for a couple of days. The 41-bed postnatal ward cares for over 5,500 women and babies a year. Baby bath classes run at 9am and 6.30pm, and it helps to go to one before you leave.
