How do I book in to have my baby at North West Private Hospital?

To give birth here, you need a private obstetrician who works at North West Private Hospital.

1. See your GP. Your GP confirms the pregnancy and writes a referral to the obstetrician you choose.
2. Check your health fund. Ask whether you are covered for pregnancy and birth, and whether your baby is covered if they need the Special Care Nursery. You can also pay for yourself if you are not insured.
3. Follow your obstetrician's advice. Your obstetrician will explain how to book in at the hospital.
4. Complete the online admission form. This confirms your booking. Have your Medicare card and health fund details ready. For help with the form, call Ramsay Health Hub on 1800 716 688 (24/7).
5. Ask about Know My Midwife. If your obstetrician takes part, a Know My Midwife midwife contacts you at around 20 weeks to talk about your options and book appointments. If you have not heard by then, call Maternity Reception on (07) 3353 7825.

What pregnancy care options does North West Private Hospital offer?

• Private obstetrician care. Your chosen obstetrician looks after you in pregnancy and for the birth, with support from the hospital's midwives.
• Know My Midwife program. A team of midwives shares your care with your obstetrician (if your obstetrician takes part). It includes antenatal appointments, classes, care in labour and birth, and postnatal care for up to 6 weeks. There is no out-of-pocket cost to take part.

Does North West Private Hospital run antenatal classes and tours?

Yes. There are two face-to-face classes: Preparation for Labour and Birth, and Caesarean Birth. They are held in the Education room in the Executive building, and you can bring one support person. Classes are only for women booked to give birth at the hospital, and you can book one only after the hospital has your online admission form. The hospital suggests starting classes from 28 weeks, and places are limited.

Group tours of the maternity unit run every Saturday from 11am to 12pm. You do not need to book. Go to D Ward Maternity at the start time.

What are the North West Private birth suites like?

Each birth suite is private, with an adjustable birthing bed, a large ensuite and a kitchenette. Some ensuites have a bath. You can use birth balls and heat packs, and a wireless monitor (CTG) lets you move around while your baby's heart rate is checked. A CTG is done when you are admitted. If you need a caesarean, you move to an operating theatre, and one support person may go with you. The hospital has anaesthetist, paediatrician and physician cover 24 hours a day.

Does North West Private Hospital have a special care nursery?

Yes. The hospital has a 15-cot Level 4 Special Care Nursery. It cares for babies born from 32 weeks of pregnancy. The nursery has a private feeding room and a baby bathing area, and parents can be with their baby whenever they wish.

How long will I stay after giving birth at North West Private Hospital?

On average, women stay 2 to 4 days after a vaginal birth and 3 to 5 days after a caesarean. Every room is private with an ensuite, and there are no shared rooms. Standard rooms have a sleep-out couch or recliner, so your partner can stay with you, and partners can order meals from the menu at no extra cost. Partners are welcome at any time. Other visitors can come from 3pm to 8pm each day. The unit has a quiet rest time from 1pm to 3pm, when visitors and phone calls are not allowed.

What support is there after I take my baby home?

• Know My Midwife postnatal clinic: if you are in the program, you have bulk-billed check-ups for up to 6 weeks after the birth.
• Lactation Clinic: help with breastfeeding from lactation consultants, by appointment, on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 12.30pm to 4.30pm. It is open to families who gave birth anywhere. To register, email KMM.NWB@ramsayhealth.com.au with the reference "Lactation Clinic", your name and phone number, your baby's date of birth, where you gave birth and your concerns.
• Women's health physiotherapy: one-to-one care for pelvic floor, bladder and return to exercise, with no referral needed, on (07) 3353 7867.
