How do I get referred to or book in at Redcliffe Hospital?

A GP or private midwife can refer you, or you can refer yourself.

1. See your GP or a private midwife. They confirm your pregnancy and can refer you to the hospital.
2. Get a referral. Your GP or private midwife sends a referral letter to the hospital. You can also use the Queensland Health pregnancy self-referral form, though a GP may still need to order blood tests or scans.
3. Register online. Read about the care options, then complete the antenatal registration form on the Metro North website.
4. Wait for your letter. The hospital sends you a letter with your first appointment, usually between 9 and 13 weeks.

What pregnancy care options does Redcliffe Hospital offer?

• Midwives clinic. Antenatal clinic midwives care for you, and an obstetrician joins in if problems come up.
• Midwifery Group Practice. One main midwife from a small group cares for you from booking-in until 6 weeks after birth. Places are limited, and you register your interest online.
• Private practice midwife. A private midwife authorised to work at the hospital cares for you, including in labour. There may be a cost, with some Medicare or health fund rebates.
• Ngarrama. A midwife and an advanced Indigenous health worker care for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women, or women having an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander baby.
• Young Parent Group. Midwife appointments and classes in a relaxed group, for mums aged 21 or younger.
• Obstetric care with doctors and midwives. For conditions such as diabetes, epilepsy, high blood pressure or heart disease, or problems that start in pregnancy.
• GP shared care. Your GP gives most of your care, with hospital visits at 12 to 13, 20, 36 and 41 weeks.

Where is the Redcliffe Hospital antenatal clinic, and what is ANDAS?

The Antenatal Clinic is at the rear of the hospital, past the canteen, and you park and enter from Silvyn Street. Your first visit, the booking-in appointment, happens here. You get a Pregnancy Health Record to bring to every visit.

ANDAS is the hospital's Antenatal Day Assessment Service. Metro North has expanded it to run seven days a week. If you are worried about yourself or your baby, you can also call the Birth Suite on (07) 3883 7714.

What is the Redcliffe Hospital birth suite like?

The Birth Suite has 4 birthing rooms on Level 3. Each has its own bathroom and space to move in labour, with a shower, birthing ball, peanut ball (useful with an epidural), floor mats, bean bags and music.

Come in if your waters break, contractions are too painful to manage at home, you have vaginal bleeding, your baby is moving less than normal, or you are worried. Phone first and bring your Pregnancy Health Record. If you have a private or Midwifery Group Practice midwife, call them directly.

Planned caesareans are usually done in the 39th week, and a midwife supports skin-to-skin contact with your baby in the recovery unit.

What happens if my baby needs extra care after birth?

The Special Care Nursery is on the Maternity Ward, Level 3. It cares for sick and premature babies born at 32 weeks or later, including babies born before 37 weeks. Babies born before 32 weeks, or who need more complex care, are transferred to a larger neonatal centre.

How long will I stay at Redcliffe Hospital after giving birth?

After a straightforward vaginal birth, you can usually go home 6 to 24 hours later, or about 72 hours after an uncomplicated caesarean. The ward aims for discharge by 10am. Bring a baby capsule or car seat for the trip home.

Your baby stays in your room on the Maternity Ward. The hospital lists visiting hours of 8am to 1.30pm and 3.30pm to 8pm, and asks visitors to check rest times with ward staff.
