How do I book in at The Wesley Hospital to have my baby?

The Wesley is a private hospital, so your care is led by an obstetrician who is accredited to work there. Most people start with their GP.

1. See your GP. Your GP confirms the pregnancy and refers you to an obstetrician who is accredited at The Wesley.
2. Admit yourself online. The hospital asks you to confirm your booking by completing the online admission. You need to do this before you can book a class.
3. Book a class and a tour. Start the Parents-to-be Program before 36 weeks. Places fill quickly, so contact the hospital early.
4. Wait for the preadmission call. The midwives' preadmission team contacts you about four weeks before your due date.

What pregnancy care options does The Wesley Hospital offer?

• Private obstetrician care. Your obstetrician looks after you during pregnancy and works with you to plan your care. Wesley midwives support you in labour and after the birth.
• Antenatal classes. The Parents-to-be Program is run by midwives. The Extended Breastfeeding Class is run by lactation consultants and has no set week to attend.
• Maternity tours. Tours run on Saturdays and Sundays at 3pm, take about 30 minutes and depend on room availability. Call (07) 3232 7432 to book.

What are the Wesley birth suites like?

There are five birthing suites. Each one has an ensuite, fetal monitoring, a birthing bed that can change position, and dimmable lighting. You can use fit balls, bean bags and birth stools for comfort, and you have access to kitchen facilities. If you need a caesarean, it takes place in the operating theatre next to the birthing suites.

Does The Wesley Hospital have a special care nursery?

Yes. The Special Care Nursery has 12 beds and cares for sick babies and premature babies from 32 weeks of pregnancy. Staff with neonatal intensive care training, lactation consultants and midwives work there, and paediatric support is available 24 hours a day. You get an access card for the nursery and the maternity ward, and you can visit your baby as often and for as long as you like.

How long will I stay at The Wesley Hospital after giving birth?

Your doctors decide how long you stay. As a guide, the hospital says three to four nights after a vaginal birth and four to five nights after a caesarean. You recover in a private room with an ensuite. Your partner can stay overnight at no extra fee, and partner meals are available from the room service menu. General visiting hours are 8am to 8pm.

What support is there after I take my baby home?

• Midwife home visits: if you live in the Wesley catchment area, you can have two visits at home from a Wesley Maternity midwife in the first month. These are usually arranged before you leave hospital.
• Lactation Clinic and home lactation visits: breastfeeding help from a lactation consultant, at the hospital's Lactation Clinic or in one-hour sessions at home. Book on (07) 3232 7432 and check your health fund rebate.
• Women's Health Physiotherapy: an outpatient clinic with personalised consultations, an assessment and a treatment plan.
• Australian Breastfeeding Association: breastfeeding counsellors on 1800 686 268.
• Child Health Service: free for families in Greater Brisbane, on 1300 366 039, Monday to Friday, 8.30am to 4.30pm.
