To have your baby at John Flynn, you need a private obstetrician who practises there. The hospital lists its obstetricians on its website. After a positive pregnancy test, see your GP, who can refer you to the obstetrician you choose.

1. Choose an obstetrician. Pick one who practises at John Flynn and book your first appointment.
2. Get your booking papers. Your obstetrician confirms the pregnancy and gives you the booking information.
3. Register online. Complete the online bookings registration form within 2 weeks of getting your papers. Your booking is not guaranteed until the hospital receives it.

• Private obstetrician care. Your obstetrician looks after you through pregnancy and the birth, with the hospital's midwives.
• Know My Midwife program. Midwives share your care with your obstetrician. It includes postnatal care for up to 6 weeks, and access to a women's health physiotherapist, lactation consultants and the postnatal clinic. There is no out-of-pocket cost to take part, though fees apply for check-ups after 6 weeks. Book through the Maternity Care Navigators.

The Maternity Care Navigators are registered midwives and your main point of contact. They can answer questions about your pregnancy, your hospital stay, the Know My Midwife program, tours, childbirth and parenting classes, and support services. What classes does John Flynn run?

John Flynn runs antenatal and childbirth education classes, a caesarean section class, baby CPR classes and maternity physiotherapy classes. There are also extra classes and online resources in hypnobirthing and calm birth.

What are the John Flynn birth suites like?

The birth suites are on the maternity ward on Level 3. One suite has a large, deep bath, which you can use in labour or for a water birth. Water birth depends on availability and whether it is safe for you. Wireless monitoring lets you move around while your baby's heart rate is checked. The suites are close to the operating theatres, with direct access if you need a caesarean.

Does John Flynn have a special care nursery?

Yes. The Special Care Nursery admits babies from 34 weeks of pregnancy who are sick or premature and not ready to go home. Staff can give breathing support (CPAP). If a baby needs full ventilation, the team cares for them while they wait to transfer to a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Parents can visit their baby at any time. Paediatric care is available 24 hours a day, and a paediatrician checks your baby in the first 48 hours.

How long will I stay at John Flynn after giving birth?

After a vaginal birth with no problems, most mothers and babies go home after the fourth or fifth day. After a caesarean with no problems, it is usually after the fifth or sixth day. Discharge time is 9am. Standard suites have a double bed, a private ensuite and space for a single bed for your partner. Deluxe Parenting Suites have ocean views and partner accommodation. Partners can stay overnight if they agree to the hospital's Partner Code of Conduct.

Visiting hours are 8am to 8pm each day. There is no visiting during the rest period from 12pm to 3pm. Partners are welcome at any time.

What support is there after I take my baby home?

• Know My Midwife care: postnatal care for up to 6 weeks, including the postnatal clinic.
• Breastfeeding help: midwives and lactation consultants can support you after you leave hospital. Call the Navigators on (07) 5586 5628.
• Parents Group: meets on the first Thursday of each month, 9am to 11am, in the first floor auditorium of the main hospital.
• Worried about your baby: contact your paediatrician. For after-hours emergencies, go to the John Flynn Emergency Centre.
