How do I get referred to Logan Hospital for maternity care?

Logan Hospital is a public hospital, so you can have your baby there as a public patient. Your GP or a private midwife starts the process.

1. Book your first pregnancy appointment. See your GP or a private midwife early in your pregnancy.
2. Choose your type of care. They talk you through the options below and help you pick the one that suits you.
3. They let the hospital know. Your GP or midwife sends your details to Logan Hospital so your hospital care can be arranged.

What pregnancy care options does Logan Hospital offer?

• GP shared care. Most of your appointments are with your GP. The hospital still sees you for a first booking appointment and again at around 20, 36 and 41 weeks, so expect 3 to 4 hospital visits.
• Hospital midwifery care. Hospital midwives look after you through pregnancy, labour and birth. You may see a different midwife at each appointment, and a midwife visits you at home after the birth.
• Private midwifery care. You choose your own midwife, who needs admitting rights at the hospital. There is a cost, though Medicare or private health insurance may cover some of it.
• Specialist obstetric care. For complex or high-risk pregnancies, or a medical condition that could affect your pregnancy. This includes the Maternal Fetal Medicine and Obstetric Medicine services.
• Midwifery Group Practice (MGP). The same midwife cares for you through pregnancy, birth and the first few weeks after. MGP midwives also provide cultural support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women, and care for women who speak languages other than English.

Where is the Logan Hospital antenatal clinic?

What is the Logan Hospital birth suite like?

You will give birth in one of the hospital's birthing suites, and each room has its own bathroom. When you arrive, the midwives talk you through pain relief options and ask whether you would like to use a warm bath or a birth pool during labour.

If you need a caesarean, you move to the operating theatre. If a private midwife or your MGP midwife has been caring for you, they may be able to stay with you.

What happens if my baby needs extra care after birth?

Babies who need more care, including babies born from 32 weeks, are looked after in the special care nursery at Logan Hospital. Babies born before 32 weeks, or who are very unwell, are moved to Gold Coast University Hospital, the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital or the Mater Mothers' Hospital. Once they are well enough, they come back to Logan Hospital to get ready to go home.

How long will I stay in hospital after giving birth at Logan Hospital?

After a straightforward birth, most women go home around 24 hours later. If there were complications, or you had a caesarean, you may stay longer. Make sure someone can take you home, and have a car seat ready for your baby.

What support is there after I take my baby home?

• Midwife home visits, arranged through the hospital or by your GP
• Private midwife visits, if you arrange them yourself (there is a cost)
• Your GP, for ongoing care for you and your baby
• Lactation consultants, for help with breastfeeding
• Child health checks through Children's Health Queensland, which cover growth and development, immunisations and parenting advice
• The Perinatal Wellbeing Service, which offers emotional and mental health support during pregnancy and until your baby turns one (for women aged 18 and over; you can refer yourself)
