What are the birth suites like?

Mater describes the birthing suites as modern, with water birth options. Some of the rooms have a birthing pool, for women who have water immersion in their birth plan. If you are booked for a planned caesarean or an induction, go to the maternity ward to be admitted.

Is there a special care nursery?

Yes. The Special Care Nursery is between the maternity ward and the birth suites, so it is close to both.

How long will I stay after giving birth?

Mater says to expect three to five days in hospital. As a guide, that is about 3 nights after a vaginal birth and about 5 nights after a caesarean, if there are no problems. Discharge time is 10am, so arrange for someone to collect you then. Every mother has a private room with an ensuite and a reclining chair for her partner. There is also a maternity lounge where you can have morning or afternoon tea and meet other parents.

Visitors are welcome from 10am to 12pm and 3pm to 8pm, seven days a week. There is a rest period from 12pm to 3pm. The ward is locked, so visitors use the intercom and wait for staff to let them in. Please ask people not to visit if they are unwell.

What support is there after I take my baby home?
