How do I book in at Hervey Bay Hospital to have my baby?

You can be referred by your GP, or you can refer yourself. These steps show the usual path.

What pregnancy care options are there at Hervey Bay Hospital?

• Midwifery and obstetric care. A team of hospital midwives works together with the obstetrics team. You go to specialist, midwifery or doctor clinics, held at set times Monday to Thursday during business hours.
• GP shared care. If your pregnancy is uncomplicated, your GP shares your care with the hospital and organises your hospital visits at around 20, 36 and 41 weeks.
• Midwifery group practice (MGP). You have your own primary midwife, supported by a small team, through pregnancy, labour and birth. Appointments can be at the hospital, at home or in the community, and your midwives care for you at home for up to 4 weeks after the birth. Does Hervey Bay Hospital have a neonatal nursery?

Yes. The neonatal nursery cares for unwell and preterm babies from 32 weeks. If your baby is born before 32 weeks, or is too unwell to be cared for there, they are transferred to another hospital with a larger neonatal nursery. Your baby comes back to Hervey Bay when they are well enough.

What are the Hervey Bay Hospital maternity visiting hours?

The maternity ward is open to visitors every day from 11am to 1pm and from 2.30pm to 8pm. Partners can visit at any time.

What support is there after I take my baby home?

After the birth, you are cared for on the postnatal ward. Staff help with feeding, caring for your baby and connecting you with community services. Support then carries on at home.

• MGP care: if you are in the midwifery group practice, your midwives care for you at home for up to 4 weeks.
• GP check-ups: see your GP one week after the birth, and again when your baby is 6 weeks old.
