How do I book in to have my baby at Gladstone Hospital?

Your care starts with your GP or a private midwife. These are the usual steps.

1. Make an appointment with your GP or a private midwife. Talk about the type of pregnancy care you would like.
2. Choose your care option. Your GP or private midwife will then let the hospital know so your care can begin.
3. Go to your booking-in appointment. If you choose GP shared care, your booking-in visit is at 12 to 14 weeks.
4. Ask about extra support if you need it. A midwife navigator can help coordinate appointments, arrange transport and book accommodation. Your health professional can refer you, with your consent.

What pregnancy care options does Gladstone Hospital offer?

• GP shared care. Your GP and the hospital share your care. You have a booking-in appointment at 12 to 14 weeks, then appointments at 20, 36 and 41 weeks.
• Midwives clinics. Your pregnancy care is with the hospital's midwives.
• Midwifery group practice (MGP). You have your own primary midwife, with care at home for up to six weeks after the birth. Appointments can be at the hospital, at home or in the community.
• Obstetrician care. For women with existing health conditions such as diabetes, epilepsy, high blood pressure or heart disease. Your care is shared between doctors and midwives.
• Private midwife care. Your private midwife must have admitting rights at the hospital. You pay for this care, and Medicare rebates are available.

Does Gladstone Hospital run antenatal classes?

What should I do when labour starts?

What is the Gladstone Women and Family Centre like?

The Women and Family Centre opened in the West Wing in July 2026 and brings maternity and children's services together. It has single maternity rooms with their own ensuite, two birth suites, and two early labour and induction rooms. You can stay in your own room for longer in labour before you move to a birth suite. Your pain relief options are confirmed with you, and if you need a caesarean, the obstetric team performs it. The birth suite and operating theatre are both inside the centre, and there are overnight facilities for support people.

Is there a nursery for newborns at Gladstone Hospital?

The Women and Family Centre has a dedicated nursery for newborn care. Its level of care is not published, and the Gladstone maternity page does not list a special care nursery. Higher-risk pregnancies are referred to Rockhampton Hospital, which has more specialised support, so ask your midwife or doctor if you are worried your baby may need extra care.

What are the Gladstone Hospital maternity visiting hours?

Visiting hours for the Women and Newborn Unit are every day, 10am to 12.30pm and 4pm to 8pm. Partners can visit at any time.

What support is there after I take my baby home?

• Child health: after the birth, you are referred to the Child, Youth and Family service. A Maternal and Child Health nurse can support you and your baby for the first 5 years.
• Child health clinics: free Queensland Government services that may include checks on your baby's growth and development.
• 13 HEALTH: call 13 43 25 84 and ask for a child health nurse, 7am to 9pm, 7 days. Registered nurses answer 24 hours a day.
• PANDA: support with anxiety and depression in pregnancy and after birth on 1300 726 306, Monday to Friday, 9am to 7pm.
