How do I book in at Bundaberg Hospital to have my baby?

You can be referred by your GP, or you can refer yourself. These steps show the usual path.

1. See your GP or a private midwife. Make an appointment early in your pregnancy. They start your early pregnancy care and let the hospital know about you.
2. Choose your type of care. Read the options below. If you would like the midwifery group practice, ask your GP for a referral at 8 to 10 weeks, because spaces are limited.
3. Get a referral, or refer yourself. Your GP can refer you. You can also self-refer by calling the Bundaberg Family Unit on (07) 4303 8410.
4. Book your classes. Call the same number to book birth and parenting classes. The dates are sent to you by email.

What pregnancy care options are there at Bundaberg Hospital?

• Midwifery and obstetric care. Hospital midwives work together with the obstetrics team. You go to specialist, midwifery or doctor clinics, held at set times Monday to Thursday during business hours.
• GP shared care. Your GP shares your care with the hospital and organises your hospital visits at around 20, 36 and 41 weeks.
• Midwifery group practice (MGP). You have your own primary midwife, supported by a small team, through pregnancy, labour and birth. Your midwives also care for you at home for up to 4 weeks after the birth. Spaces are limited, so ask your GP for a referral at 8 to 10 weeks.
• Private obstetric care. You choose a private obstetrician, with a referral from your GP.

Where is the Bundaberg Hospital antenatal clinic?

Antenatal clinics run at set times, Monday to Thursday during business hours. The hospital map lists the Antenatal and Gynaecology Clinics on Level 1, the same level as the Family Unit. Does Bundaberg Hospital run antenatal classes?

Yes. Birth and parenting classes cover childbirth, breastfeeding, and support for partners and new parents. Book on (07) 4303 8410, and the dates are emailed to you.

What should I do when labour starts?

If you have gone into labour, try to call the Family Unit on (07) 4303 8410 before you come to hospital. You give birth in the birth suite. If you feel sick or worried during pregnancy, call your GP or midwife, and after 20 weeks you can also call the Family Unit with any concerns or questions. In an emergency, call Triple Zero (000) or go to the emergency department.

Can I have a water birth at Bundaberg Hospital?

Possibly. In February 2025, Wide Bay Hospital and Health Service reported the first water birth at Bundaberg Hospital, using an inflatable birth pool. Water birth is offered when specially trained staff are on shift, so ask your midwife whether it could suit you.

Does Bundaberg Hospital have a neonatal nursery?

Yes. The neonatal nursery cares for unwell and preterm babies from 32 weeks. If your baby is born before 32 weeks, or is too unwell to be cared for there, they are transferred to another hospital with a larger neonatal nursery. Your baby comes back to Bundaberg when they are well enough.

What are the Bundaberg Hospital maternity visiting hours?

The maternity ward is open to visitors every day from 10.30am to 12pm and from 3pm to 8.30pm. Partners can visit at any time.

What support is there after I take my baby home?

After the birth, you are cared for on the postnatal ward. Support then carries on at home.

• Home visits: if you live within 25 km of Bundaberg Hospital, midwives can visit you at home for the first 2 weeks.
• MGP care: if you are in the midwifery group practice, your midwives care for you at home for up to 4 weeks.
• GP check-ups: see your GP one week after the birth, and again at 6 weeks.
• 13 HEALTH: call 13 43 25 84 and ask for a child health nurse, 7am to 9pm, 7 days. Registered nurses take calls 24 hours a day.
• Child health clinics: free Queensland Government services that may include growth and development checks for your baby.

A new Bundaberg Hospital is being built at Thabeban, near the Bundaberg Ring Road and Kay McDuff Drive. The first stage is due in 2031, and the timeline may change. For now, maternity care stays at the Bourbong Street hospital.
