How do I book in to have my baby at St John of God Murdoch?

Booking at a private hospital starts with your obstetrician, not the hospital.

  1. Find an obstetrician. Choose a private obstetrician who delivers at Murdoch. The St John of God website lists them.
  2. Check your health cover. Private maternity at Murdoch is for patients with gold level private health insurance. Your fund covers most hospital fees, and any out-of-pocket costs depend on your obstetrician. You can also pay for your care yourself.
  3. Get registered. Your obstetrician completes your hospital registration and sends the paperwork in. The hospital then contacts you about the rest of your booking.
  4. Do your online admission. Once it is done, you can book parent education classes.
  5. See the ward. Join a free maternity tour, or ask for one through the online maternity enquiry form.

What pregnancy care and classes does St John of God Murdoch offer?

  • Private obstetrician care. You usually see your obstetrician monthly until about 28 weeks, every two weeks until 36 weeks, then weekly until your baby is born. Call your obstetrician's rooms with questions about your care.
  • Core parent education classes. Signs and stages of labour, birth options and the first days after the birth. Midwives explain your options so you can make decisions.
  • Other classes. An early pregnancy class, two breastfeeding classes, refresher classes if you have had a baby before, and a tiny tots first aid class.

All classes are held in the hospital auditorium and are for parents booked to give birth at Murdoch.

What are the St John of God Murdoch birthing suites like?

There are 6 birthing suites. Each private suite has a bed, a private bathroom, comfortable seating, a space to care for your newborn and the clinical equipment needed for the birth. A Birthing Suite Coordinator is on site to help your admission and care go smoothly. The theatre suite is available 24 hours a day, and the hospital says it regularly performs emergency caesareans there. After the birth, you move to St Mary's Ward on the same floor.

Phone the hospital if you think you are in labour, if your waters break or you are bleeding, if you have a severe headache, blurred vision or strong pain in your tummy, or if your baby moves less than usual from 20 weeks. A midwife will assess your situation and guide you on what to do next, which may be coming in.

What happens if my baby needs extra care after birth?

St John of God Health Care says babies who need extra care, for example after a premature birth, may be admitted to one of its neonatal units or special care nurseries, and babies with more complex needs are transferred to a hospital with a higher level of newborn care. The Murdoch maternity page does not say what newborn care is available on site, so ask your obstetrician what would happen if your baby needed more care.

How long will I stay, and what are the visiting hours?

St John of God Health Care puts all maternity patients in private rooms, and partners are welcome at all times, including overnight. As a guide, you may go home by day 4 after a vaginal birth or by day 5 after a caesarean, if you and your baby are well. The main hospital's visiting hours for other guests are 3pm to 8pm. Try to visit outside meal and rest times, and keep children supervised.
