What antenatal services are at Armadale Hospital?
The Antenatal Clinic runs the midwife clinics and the antenatal education classes. Classes cover labour and birth options, pain relief, newborn care, feeding and the role of your support person. They are held in person or online, and the hospital suggests starting between 28 and 32 weeks. An Early Pregnancy Assessment Service supports women with problems in the first 14 weeks, on two half days a week, by referral. If you are bleeding heavily or in severe pain in early pregnancy, go to the Emergency Department. Boodjari Yorgas runs its clinic at the Community Health Centre at the hospital.
What is the Armadale birth suite like?
The Maud Bellas Maternity Unit's birth suites include one with a birthing pool you may be able to use in labour. You can have up to two support people with you. The six-bed Antenatal Assessment Unit checks on you and your baby for problems such as reduced baby movements, bleeding, waters breaking early or signs of preterm labour, and a midwife sees you as soon as possible. To talk with a midwife about labour or a worry, phone the triage midwife on (08) 9391 2947. If you cannot get through, call the hospital on (08) 9391 2000. In an emergency, call 000.
How long will I stay, and what are the Armadale maternity visiting hours?
Armadale does not publish a typical length of stay, so ask your midwife. With Boodjari Yorgas, you can usually go home 6 to 12 hours after a normal birth with no problems. Before you leave, a GP obstetrician or consultant paediatrician checks your baby, and by law you need an approved baby car seat fitted in your car. On the postnatal ward, immediate family can visit from 8am to 1pm and other visitors from 3pm to 8pm. There are no visitors from 1pm to 3pm, and only two visitors at a time. Partners and support people cannot stay overnight.
What support is there after I take my baby home?
- Visiting Midwifery Service: for most women in the Armadale catchment, a midwife visits you at home every day until your baby is seven days old, between 8am and 4pm, 7 days a week.
- Child health nurse: after the midwife visits, your care moves to the community child health nurse, who usually contacts you before your baby is 14 days old.
- Boodjari Yorgas: midwives support you at home and link you with a child health nurse and an Aboriginal Child Health Service.
- Ngala Parenting Line: (08) 9368 9368, 8am to 8pm, 7 days a week.
- healthdirect: 1800 022 222, 24 hour health advice.
For sleep, follow the Red Nose safe sleep recommendations from your first night at home.
