How do I book in at Fiona Stanley Hospital?
You usually need to live in the hospital's catchment and have a GP referral, unless you need tertiary-level care.
- Check your postcode. The hospital's catchment postcodes are 6148 to 6150, 6152 to 6160, 6162 to 6164 and 6166.
- Apply early for midwife-led care. For the Family Birthing Centre or midwifery group practice, refer yourself online or by email. If you are offered a place, you will be told between 8 and 12 weeks of pregnancy.
- Get a GP referral. Ask your GP whether GP shared care suits you.
- Go to your booking visit. If you are not in GP shared care, you will have a booking visit with a midwife.
- Book your classes. Call the switchboard on (08) 6152 2222 and ask for the maternity services clerical staff.
What pregnancy care options does Fiona Stanley Hospital offer?
- Family Birthing Centre. Midwife-led care for healthy women expecting a normal birth, living within a 50 minute drive. Women south of the river are given priority.
- Midwifery group practice. A known midwife, or a small group of midwives, gives your main care in pregnancy and after the birth.
- All-Risk Continuity Midwifery Group Practice. For women with higher-risk factors: the same midwife through pregnancy, birth and after, working with the medical teams.
- Midwifery Antenatal and Postnatal Service (MAPS). A small team of midwives, with home visits after the birth, for all women in the catchment postcodes.
- GP shared care. Your GP shares your pregnancy care with the hospital.
- Boodjari Bidi Clinic. Pregnancy care for Aboriginal women and families, with the same small team of midwives and Aboriginal health practitioners at every visit. "Boodjari Bidi" means "pregnancy path" in Noongar.
- Specialist clinics. Including diabetes in pregnancy, maternal fetal medicine, the Karri clinic for complex care, and next birth after caesarean.
The hospital explains these options on its About our maternity care page.
Where is the Fiona Stanley Hospital antenatal clinic?
Antenatal clinics are held in Clinic 5, Outpatients, off the main concourse. Clinics run from 8am to 12pm and 1pm to 5pm, Monday to Friday. For checks outside your appointments, the Maternal Fetal Assessment Unit on Level 3D assesses women in pregnancy and early labour, 24 hours a day.
What is the Fiona Stanley Hospital birthing suite like?
The birthing suite is on Level 3 of the main hospital building, and the hospital also has an induction of labour suite. Take the blue or orange lifts from the main concourse. Up to 2 support people, including your partner, can be with you in the birthing suite. Call the Maternal Fetal Assessment Unit on (08) 6152 4301 before you come in if you think you are in labour, your contractions are coming at regular times, your waters have broken, your baby is moving less, or you have bleeding. On very busy days you may be directed to another maternity hospital, and the midwife will tell you when you call. Bring your regular medicines in their full packaging.

What is the Fiona Stanley Family Birthing Centre?
The Family Birthing Centre is a midwife-led unit on Level 3D for healthy women with an uncomplicated pregnancy. Its three birthing rooms each have a birthing pool, day beds and chairs, and an ensuite with a separate shower and toilet. For eligibility questions, call (08) 6152 9416.

Yes. The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit is on Level 3. All babies born at the hospital before 35 weeks are admitted to it, and about 870 babies were admitted to the neonatal unit in 2024. Complex fetal medicine care, including births before 28 weeks, is not provided here, and these women are transferred to King Edward Memorial Hospital. To reach the unit, call (08) 6152 2222 and ask for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. A new Women and Babies Hospital will be built in the Fiona Stanley Hospital precinct in Murdoch to replace King Edward Memorial Hospital.
