The hospital suggests you book in between 10 and 12 weeks of pregnancy. Referrals now go through an online system called Consultmed.

  1. Get a referral, or refer yourself. Your GP can send a referral online. If you do not have one, you can fill in the pregnancy self-referral form through the same Consultmed link on the hospital's Women's Health Outpatients page.
  2. Get your early tests. The hospital asks you to bring printed blood test results and your dating ultrasound report.
  3. Go to your booking appointment. Bring your Medicare card, proof of your current address and your GP referral letter. Overseas visitors without Medicare should bring a passport, visa details and health fund details if they have them.
  4. Complete your admission papers. At your first booking, go to Pre-admissions on the ground floor of the New Clinical Building, reception 33.
  5. Book your classes. Parent education classes are booked online through TryBooking.

  • Midwives clinics. Pregnancy care from hospital midwives, with community and weekend clinics as well.
  • Obstetrics clinics. Pregnancy care from the hospital's obstetric doctors.
  • Midwifery Group Practice (MGP). A known midwife cares for you in pregnancy, at the birth and at home afterwards. Only women at medically low risk are eligible. You fill in an expression of interest, which does not guarantee a place.
  • GP shared care. Your GP shares your pregnancy care with the hospital.
  • Other programs. The hospital also lists the Midwifery Antenatal Postnatal Service (MAPS), Drugs and Pregnancy Coordinated Care, Young Parents Coordinated Care, the Safe Start midwifery model and an Aboriginal model of care. Ask at your booking visit which one suits you.

NSW Health explains each option on its Pregnancy care options in NSW page.

The Birthing Unit cares for women from 20 weeks of pregnancy, from low-risk pregnancies through to complex needs, until birth and the early days after. In 2024 it moved into new birthing suites in the Integrated Services Building, which NSW Health says has 10 new birthing suites. Every birthing room has a large, deep bath for relaxing, pain relief or birth, and you can ask for a water birth if your pregnancy and labour are uncomplicated. Birth balls, bean bags, floor mats and a birth stool are also available. If you would like your other children at the birth, tell the clinic during pregnancy so a sibling preparation class can be arranged.

Does Liverpool Hospital have a NICU?

Yes. Liverpool Hospital has a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit that is part of the NSW statewide network caring for premature and sick newborns. It is funded for 15 intensive care beds and 19 special care beds. It mainly cares for babies from south western Sydney, and it also takes babies transferred from other areas, including regional NSW. The new unit has a camera system so parents can see their baby when they cannot be at the cot side.

How long will I stay in hospital after giving birth at Liverpool Hospital?

The hospital does not publish a typical stay for all women. If you are in MGP and you and your baby are both well, you may be able to go home 4 to 6 hours after the birth, with your MGP midwife supporting you at home.

What are the visiting hours for Liverpool Hospital maternity?

General visiting hours are 8am to 8pm, seven days a week. The hospital says hours in special areas such as the Birthing Unit and the nursery may vary, so check with the unit before you visit.
