How do I book in at Prince of Wales Private Hospital to have my baby?

This is a private hospital, so your care is led by one of the hospital's obstetricians. You book in yourself, as your obstetrician does not do it for you.

  1. Get a GP referral. Once your GP confirms the pregnancy, ask for a referral to one of the hospital's obstetricians. The hospital lists them on its website.
  2. Book in online. Complete the hospital's online admission form. Have your obstetrician's name, your health fund details, your GP's details, emergency contacts and your medicines ready. You get an email to confirm.
  3. Talk to your health fund early. The hospital says most funds do not automatically cover neonatal care unless family cover has been in place for three months.
  4. Book your classes. After your booking is confirmed, you are emailed an access code to book the birth and parenting course. Start it from about 30 weeks if you can.
  5. Planned caesarean. A pre-admission visit with a midwife is set for the two weeks before your caesarean.

What maternity care and classes does Prince of Wales Private offer?

  • Private obstetrician care. Your chosen obstetrician cares for you in pregnancy and is there for the birth. Midwives, anaesthetists, paediatricians and nurses are part of the maternity team.
  • Birth and parenting education. A face-to-face course run over two Saturdays or two Sundays. A fee applies, and rebates may be available.
  • Caesarean session. A one-day class for people having a planned caesarean.
  • Classes on the ward. Lactation support, physiotherapy and baby bathing after the birth.
  • Baby and child CPR. A three-hour course run by CPR Kids in Bondi Junction.

To compare private and public care, see NSW Health's Pregnancy care options in NSW.

What is the Prince of Wales Private Birthing Suite like?

The Birthing Suite is on Level 6 and sits directly above the operating theatres, so an emergency caesarean can happen quickly. The delivery suites have wireless fetal monitoring, so you can move around in labour. A second support person can be at the birth if your obstetrician and the Birthing Suite Manager agree. Children cannot visit the Birthing Suite.

Call the Birthing Suite or your obstetrician straight away if you have bleeding, your waters break or keep leaking, you have regular contractions or labour before 37 weeks, unusual or severe tummy pain, blurred vision or dizziness, or you are worried about your baby's movements.

Does Prince of Wales Private Hospital have a NICU?

The hospital has its own Special Care Nursery, right next to the private maternity ward, where neonatologists give 24-hour care. Twins born a little early, at 33 weeks or later, can be cared for there. For emergencies, the hospital has Neonatal Intensive Care Unit backup at the Royal Hospital for Women. In the rare case of serious preterm problems, you and your baby move to the relevant public hospital critical care unit. Because the hospitals share a campus, this happens without leaving the site, and Sydney Children's Hospital services are close by.

How long will I stay at Prince of Wales Private after giving birth?

The hospital expects a stay of four nights after a vaginal birth and five nights after a caesarean, longer if there are complications. Discharge time is 10am. You have your own newly refurbished room with an ensuite, and each room has a chaise or sofa bed. Your partner is welcome to stay for a nightly rate that includes meals. Your baby rooms in with you, midwives help with newborn care, and lactation consultants are available if you need them.

Visiting hours are strictly 4pm to 7pm daily, with no more than two visitors plus your partner at the bedside. The only children under 12 who can visit are your own.

What support is there after I take my baby home?

  • Maternity Ward: call (02) 9650 4465 if you have concerns after you leave, and a midwife can help.
  • Child and Family Health: you are referred after discharge. The nurse visits you at home or invites you to their clinic, and can link you with a virtual parents' group.
  • Australian Breastfeeding Association: 1800 686 268.
  • Parent helplines: Karitane 1300 227 464 and Tresillian 1300 272 736.
  • healthdirect: 24 hour health advice on 1800 022 222. In an emergency, call Triple Zero (000).
