  1. Book an early appointment. SA Health suggests having your first pregnancy appointment by 10 weeks, with your GP or a private midwife or obstetrician.
  2. Contact your local health service. To plan a birth in Port Lincoln, ask your GP to refer you, or call the hospital on (08) 7669 1200 to make your first pregnancy appointment.
  3. Talk about your care options. In Port Lincoln, GPs and community midwives share your care before, during and after the birth. Ask how this would work for you.

What pregnancy care options are there in Port Lincoln?

These are the public options SA Health describes for South Australia. Not every option runs at every hospital, so ask your GP or the hospital which ones are offered in Port Lincoln.

  • GP obstetric shared care. Your GP gives much of your routine pregnancy care closer to home, working with the public hospital maternity service. GPEx runs the statewide program and has a locator to find a shared care GP.
  • Hospital-based care. Doctors and midwives see you in hospital clinics. This option suits most women, including those with a health condition.
  • Midwifery continuity of care. In Midwifery Group Practice, one main midwife cares for you in pregnancy, birth and after. In MAPS, the same midwife sees you in pregnancy and after the birth, but not in labour. Ask whether either runs locally.
  • Aboriginal Family Birthing Program. In the Eyre and Far North, SA Health lists this program at Ceduna Hospital. It is not on SA Health's current list for Port Lincoln, so ask your midwife about Aboriginal health support here.

SA Health explains each option on its Choices for pregnancy care page.
