How do I book in at North Shore Private Hospital to have my baby?
North Shore Private is a private hospital, so an obstetrician who works there leads your care. NSW Health suggests you ask your GP for a referral early in your pregnancy, or contact a private obstetrician directly.
- Choose an obstetrician. The hospital lists the obstetricians who work there on its Our Obstetricians page.
- Confirm your booking online. Use the Booking In link on the hospital's maternity pages to complete your booking.
- Check your health fund cover. What you pay depends on your level of cover. The hospital contacts your health fund before you are admitted.
- Look out for emails. The hospital emails you at around 20 and 32 weeks about classes and next steps.
- Book classes and a tour. The main antenatal classes are only open to people booked in to give birth at the hospital.
If you do not have private health insurance, the hospital offers Pay-to-Stay maternity packages. Call maternity bookings on (02) 8425 3950 to talk about costs.
What pregnancy care, classes and tours does North Shore Private offer?

Does North Shore Private Hospital have a special care nursery?
Yes. The Special Care Nursery is a Level 2 nursery that cares for babies born from 32 weeks. Six paediatricians are on staff, and one is on call 24 hours a day. If your baby needs a higher level of care, they transfer to a Level 3 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Parents can visit the nursery at any time, day or night, and each baby can have 2 visitors.
How long will I stay, and what is the maternity ward like?
After a vaginal birth, you usually go home on the morning after your fourth night. After a caesarean, it is the morning after your fifth night. Your doctor may advise a longer stay. You need an approved child restraint fitted in your car before you take your baby home.
Parenting Suites are private single rooms with a double bed, so your partner can stay overnight, and a private ensuite. Upgrade packages depend on availability and cannot be booked ahead. After a caesarean, you start in a single room with a recliner for your partner, then move when it is safe. Partner meals cost extra.
What are the North Shore Private maternity visiting hours?
Maternity visiting hours are 2pm to 4pm and 6pm to 8pm. Your partner or support person can be with you on the ward at any time.
