How do I book in at Newcastle Private Hospital to have my baby?
Your care is led by a private obstetrician who works at the hospital. Your obstetrician does not book you in, so you need to do this yourself.
- See your GP. Once your GP confirms the pregnancy, ask for a referral to one of the hospital's obstetricians. Do this early.
- Book in online. Use Healthscope's eAdmissions portal. Have your obstetrician's name, health fund details, GP details, an emergency contact and your medicines ready.
- Check your email. The hospital sends a booking confirmation by email.
- Get your cost estimate. After your pre-admission consultation, the hospital sends an estimate of costs and any excess or co-payments. If you are not insured, call (02) 4941 9266 to talk about fees.
- Book a tour. Tours run at 2pm on the first and third Saturday of each month.
What pregnancy care options does Newcastle Private Hospital offer?
- Private obstetrician care. You choose your obstetrician, who manages your birth and your care after the birth. You have your postnatal check in their rooms at around 6 weeks.
- Paediatrician care for your baby. After the birth, a hospital paediatrician looks after your baby, with at least one visit in hospital. Paediatricians charge separately from your hospital stay.
- Antenatal classes. A one-day face-to-face birth class in the Croudace Building, ideally at 32 to 38 weeks, an online childbirth and parenting course, and a baby and child CPR and first aid class.
To compare private and public care, see NSW Health's Pregnancy care options in NSW.
What are the Newcastle Private Hospital birthing suites like?
Each birthing suite has an ensuite bathroom, an adjustable birthing bed, birthing balls, birth stools, support rails and wireless fetal monitoring. Every suite has a warm bath for pain relief and comfort in labour, but the hospital does not offer water births. You can have two support people during labour and birth, and a doula can be one of them if your obstetrician agrees. If you have a caesarean, the family-friendly approach means your baby, your partner and a midwife can stay with you in recovery. You get a phone call or text the working day before with your fasting and admission times.
Does Newcastle Private Hospital have a special care nursery?
Yes. The Special Care Nursery is on the postnatal ward, next to the maternity unit, and its team works with the hospital's paediatricians. It cares for sick and premature babies, for example babies with jaundice, low birth weight, low blood sugar or short-term breathing problems. The hospital says most health funds do not automatically cover neonatal care unless family cover has been in place for three months, so check your cover well before your due date.
How long will I stay at Newcastle Private Hospital after giving birth?
The hospital says to expect four nights after a vaginal birth and five nights after a caesarean. Your obstetrician and your baby's paediatrician approve your discharge, and you are asked to leave by 10am. Where possible you have a private room with an ensuite and TV. Shared rooms with two or four beds also have an ensuite. Your partner or support person is encouraged to stay with you, usually on a pull-out bed. Maternity ward visiting hours are strictly 3pm to 7pm, and children under 12 can visit in your room once the midwife confirms.
What support is there after I take my baby home?
- Hospital midwives: you can call the midwives if you are worried in the first few days at home, and they can arrange more support.
- Child and family health nurse: a nurse from your local community service contacts you within two weeks of going home. You can also use Child and Family Health drop-in clinics.
- Your obstetrician: postnatal check at around 6 weeks.
- Parent help lines: Karitane Careline 1300 227 464 and Tresillian Parents Help Line 1300 272 736.
- healthdirect: 24 hour health advice on 1800 022 222. In an emergency, call Triple Zero (000).
