The Women's Care Unit, which is the maternity ward, and the Birthing Unit are together on Level 8 of E block. Midwives, nurses, obstetricians and paediatricians care for you there. They work with GPs, social workers, physiotherapists, Aboriginal Maternal and Infant Health teams and child and family health nurses. Does Lismore Base Hospital have a special care nursery?
Yes. The Special Care Nursery is a level 4 neonatal service. It can look after most babies born after 32 weeks, and some babies born earlier with support from linked hospitals. A small number of babies need extra care that cannot be given in Lismore. They may be transferred to a higher-level hospital for more specialised care, sometimes with their mother. Staff talk with you before any transfer. When your baby is well enough, the team plans to bring them back to Lismore to be close to home. Social workers and Aboriginal liaison officers can help with transport, accommodation and costs.
What support is there after I take my baby home?
- Midwifery in the Home: a free service for most women who give birth here. A midwife visits you at home for up to two weeks after the birth if you live in the area it covers. Outside that area, a midwife can phone you or meet you at a nearby hospital.
- MGP, MAPS and AMIHS: your midwife or team keeps caring for you for a time after the birth.
- Child and family health nurses: available through Community Health centres.
- Early parenting support: through Tresillian and Gidget House. Tresillian Parents Help Line: 1300 272 736.
- Karitane Careline: 1300 227 464
- healthdirect: 1800 022 222, for 24 hour health advice
