How do I book in at Hedland Health Campus to have my baby?
WACHS does not explain online how bookings work at Hedland, so make contact with the hospital as soon as your pregnancy is confirmed.
- Ring the campus. Call (08) 9174 1000 early in your pregnancy and ask what you need to do to have your pregnancy care and birth at Hedland.
- See your GP or local midwife. They can do your first pregnancy checks and talk with you about any health issues before your hospital visits begin.
- Talk about the care you need. Ask the hospital which doctors and midwives will look after you and where your check-ups will be held.
- Sort out travel early. If you live out of town and must travel more than 100km one way to the nearest suitable specialist, you may be able to get help with costs from PATS.
- Keep the number close. Store (08) 9174 1000 in your phone, and make sure your support person has it too.
What if I live in Newman or another Pilbara town?
Some Pilbara towns do not have a birthing service. WACHS describes Newman as one of these non-birthing sites. There, an endorsed midwife offers free early pregnancy care in town, and you can refer yourself without a GP referral. The midwife can look after you from conception up to 36 weeks, and at that point women are encouraged to move to the place where they plan to give birth. Ask your midwife where that should be for you, and contact Pilbara PATS on 1800 138 653 to ask about help with travel costs.
What is the maternity ward at Hedland Health Campus like?
When the campus was completed in 2010, replacing the old Port Hedland Regional Hospital, it included a dedicated obstetrics ward area. WACHS lists a maternity and obstetric service at the campus, but it does not publish room numbers, photos or a tour of the maternity ward. Its current pages also do not say what care the campus can give babies who need extra help after the birth, so ask your midwife or doctor what would happen if your baby needed more care. If you think labour has started, or you are worried about yourself or your baby, call (08) 9174 1000, or 000 in an emergency.
How long will I stay, and what are the visiting hours?
WACHS does not publish a usual length of stay or visiting hours for maternity at Hedland. Your midwife can tell you how long you are likely to be in hospital, and you can ring (08) 9174 1000 to check when visitors are welcome.
What support is there after I take my baby home?
- Community child health nurse: a local nurse will get in touch soon after the birth to set up your first appointment, which will probably be at home before your baby is 14 days old.
- Ngala Parenting Line: (08) 9368 9368, open 8am to 8pm every day, for parents of children up to 18.
- healthdirect: 1800 022 222, a 24 hour health advice line.
From the first night, use the Red Nose safe sleep recommendations to set up your baby's sleep space.
