How do I book in at Cabrini Malvern to have my baby?

Cabrini is a private hospital, so every patient is booked under a Cabrini obstetrician. Cabrini lists these steps.

  1. Book a tour. The tour takes about 30 minutes and a midwife hosts it.
  2. Find a Cabrini obstetrician. Use the Find a Doctor directory on the Cabrini website and filter by obstetrics.
  3. Get a GP referral. Cabrini says you need a referral from your GP to see a Cabrini obstetrician and to receive any Medicare rebate.
  4. Meet your obstetrician. Ask about your health, your insurance and out-of-pocket costs.
  5. Book in. Your obstetrician books you into Cabrini after your first visit. You can also choose a newborn paediatrician if you wish.

What pregnancy care options does Cabrini offer?

  • Private obstetrician care. Your obstetrician looks after you in pregnancy and after the birth. Cabrini midwives care for you in hospital, 24 hours a day.
  • Self-funded package. If you do not have private health insurance, Cabrini offers a self-funded package. It covers your accommodation, midwifery care, meals and a physiotherapy session. Doctors, such as your obstetrician, paediatrician and anaesthetist, invoice you separately. For details, email maternity@cabrini.com.au.

What are the Cabrini birth suites like?

Cabrini's maternity care is based in Maternity West, which gives easy access to the birth suites and the Special Care Nursery. The hospital also has its own anaesthetic department, operating theatres and an intensive care unit. Cabrini's pages do not list the features of each suite, so ask about them on a tour.

See inside: explore the maternity unit in a 3D virtual tour (3D tour linked from the Cabrini maternity page, no date given).

What are the Cabrini maternity rooms like?

After the birth you stay in a private room. Cabrini says maternity care is delivered across 24 private rooms in Maternity West and Maternity South. Rooms have an ensuite and a double bed, and your partner can stay overnight. Your baby stays in the room with you, which Cabrini calls rooming-in. Partners can order meals from the in-room menu for an extra fee.

Does Cabrini have a special care nursery?

Yes. The Special Care Nursery looks after babies who need extra attention, under specialist paediatricians. Cabrini says it is a Level 3 nursery under Victoria's newer classification. Cabrini's pages do not give the number of cots or the youngest gestation it accepts.

How long will I stay at Cabrini after giving birth, and what are the maternity visiting hours?

A typical stay is four nights after a vaginal birth or a planned caesarean, and five nights after an emergency caesarean. If you and your baby are well, you may go home sooner after talking with your doctor, and Cabrini gives an early return home support package to eligible patients.

  • Visiting hours: 3pm to 8pm.
  • Visitors: Cabrini asks you to keep to two or three people at a time. Siblings can visit, but no other children are allowed on the maternity ward.
  • Your partner: can come to the ward at any time.
  • If someone is unwell: please ask them to stay away.
